Discover the political legacy of Raghopur Assembly seat in Bihar, a stronghold of Lalu Yadav's family, shaping state politics since 1995.
Raghopur Assembly Seat: Political Stronghold of Lalu Yadav Family
Raghopur Assembly seat has a very special identity in Bihar politics. This seat is not only considered a stronghold of RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal), but it is also directly linked to Lalu Yadav and his family. Out of the last nine assembly elections, a member of the Lalu family has won this seat seven times. This figure itself shows the political direction and influence of this seat.
Raghopur Assembly seat falls under Vaishali district of Bihar. Vaishali district is divided into a total of eight assembly constituencies – Hajipur, Lalganj, Vaishali, Mahua, Rajapakar, Mahnar, Patepur, and Raghopur. Vaishali district is also important from historical and cultural point of view, but Raghopur ranks first in the field of politics.
India's first general elections were held in 1951 and with this, the journey of Raghopur assembly seat also started. In the first election, Haribansh Narayan Singh of Congress won. He retained this seat in 1957 also, but in 1962, Congress had to face defeat and Devendra Sinha of Socialist Party won.
In 1967, Haribansh Narayan Singh changed the party and contested on the ticket of Jan Sangh and won again. In 1969, Ramvriksh Rai of Congress brought this seat back to the Congress, but in 1972 Babulal Shastri of United Socialist Party defeated him. In 1977, in the wave of Janata Party, this seat also went to its account.
Uday Narayan Rai won this seat three times in a row in 1980, 1985, and 1990. What was special was that each time he contested from a different party—Janata Party (Secular), Lok Dal, and then Janata Dal. After the Janata Dal came to power in 1990, Lalu Prasad Yadav became the Chief Minister, and this was the time when a deep relationship began between the Raghopur seat and the Lalu Yadav family.
In the 1995 elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav contested from two seats—Danapur and Raghopur. He won both the seats, but he chose the Raghopur seat and reached the Assembly from here. Lalu Yadav then took oath as the Chief Minister. However, he had to step down in 1997 after his name cropped up in the fodder scam, and his wife Rabri Devi became the Chief Minister in his place.
In 2000, Lalu Yadav once again won the Raghopur seat and later vacated the seat for Rabri Devi. Rabri Devi won the by-election and reached the Assembly. In 2005, elections were held twice in Bihar—in February and October. Both times Rabri Devi won the Raghopur seat, but the RJD was out of power.
The 2010 election proved to be the biggest setback for the Lalu family. JDU's Satish Kumar captured the seat by defeating Rabri Devi by a margin of over 13,000 votes. This was the first time the Lalu family lost from Raghopur.
In 2015, Tejashwi Yadav entered politics for the first time and contested from Raghopur. He defeated JDU's Satish Kumar by a huge margin. After the victory, he became the Deputy Chief Minister in the Grand Alliance government.
In the 2020 elections too, Tejashwi Yadav maintained his hold and once again defeated Satish Kumar. This time he won by a margin of more than 38,000 votes. This was Tejashwi Yadav's second consecutive victory and in a way a strong proof of RJD's return to the Raghopur seat.
The electoral result of the Raghopur assembly seat is deeply affected by caste equations. There are about 30% Yadav voters here, who are considered to be the traditional vote bank of RJD. Apart from this, there is also a large number of Bhumihar and Paswan castes. The inclination of the Bhumihar community has generally been seen towards BJP or JDU, while Paswan voters can sometimes go towards LJP or other parties.
Tejashwi Yadav managed these equations in his favor in the 2015 and 2020 elections. He united the Yadav voters as well as the Dalit and minority community votes.
So far, elections have been held on the Raghopur assembly seat a total of 19 times, out of which:
RJD won 7 times
Congress got success 3 times
Janata Dal won 2 times
While Jansangh, Samyukta Socialist Party, Lok Dal, Janata Party (Secular) and JDU won 1 time each
BJP has not been able to win this seat even once so far, although it fielded strong candidates many times.
Preparations for the Bihar assembly elections in 2025 are in full swing. Raghopur seat will once again be one of the most important seats for political parties. While RJD and Tejashwi Yadav would like to retain this seat at all costs, opposition parties like BJP and JDU will try to make inroads here.
This election is also important for Tejashwi Yadav personally because if he wins for the third time, it will further strengthen his popularity and faith in the party leadership. On the other hand, if any other candidate wins this seat, it will be a big political signal weakening the hold of the Lalu family.
Raghopur assembly seat is not just an electoral constituency, it is a reflection of Bihar politics. This seat shows how a family made a region its political identity. Since 1995 till now, except for only once (2010), this seat has been with the Lalu family. In such a situation, it is natural for everyone's eyes to be on this seat in the 2025 elections as well.
In this long journey of politics, Raghopur has seen many names, faces, and events. But one thing is clear even today — Raghopur's role is very important in deciding the direction of Bihar's politics.
