Syanachatti Lake Disaster- Rising Yamuna Threatens Yamunotri Dham
Syanachatti Lake Disaster: Yamuna's threat increased towards Yamunotri Dham
The lake built in Syanachatti area of Uttarkashi district suddenly emptied, but now its effect is directly visible on Yamunotri Dham. After the lake emptied, the flow of Yamuna river has turned towards the temple complex, due to which danger has started looming over the Dham.
Crisis increased after the lake emptied
Due to heavy rains, the water level of Yamuna river suddenly increased on Friday night. Due to this, Syanachatti Lake Disaster came to the fore and the lake emptied naturally. But with the lake emptying, the wire crates installed for flood protection were washed away and the ghats got submerged in the river. Now due to the direct flow of the river towards the temple, a situation of danger has arisen at Yamunotri Dham.
Concern and displeasure of local people
Suresh Uniyal, former secretary of Yamunotri Temple Committee, has expressed strong displeasure over the delay in security works. He says that after last year's disaster, the Chief Minister was apprised of the situation and was assured that security works would be done on the lines of Kedarnath and machines would be airlifted. But till date no concrete action has been taken.
Questions being raised on the master plan
The temple committee and local people allege that security works are being repeatedly postponed in the name of the master plan. The question is that for how long will the master plan remain only on paper and when will the actual security of Yamunotri Dham be ensured.
Crisis on both faith and security
Yamunotri Dham is the center of faith of crores of devotees. Syanachatti Lake Disaster has put this place of faith on the brink of a major disaster. Local people and committee members are demanding the government to take concrete steps so that this historic Dham can be saved from any major tragedy.
