Political climate heats up in Bihar: Paras-RLD candidates to contest Chirag Paswan
A new twist appears to be emerging in Bihar politics. Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) chief Pashupati Kumar Paras has announced that his party will field candidates in all the seats contested by Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader and Union Minister Chirag Paswan. This decision is considered strategically important for the 2025 Chirag Paswan Bihar Election.
Paras made this announcement at the party's parliamentary board meeting. He clarified that the RLJP will field candidates in all the seats to ensure Chirag Paswan's candidates face a crushing defeat. Speaking to reporters, RLD chief spokesperson Shravan Agarwal said, "Parliamentary board chairman and former MP Suraj Bhan Singh announced that we will ensure the crushing defeat of all the candidates fielded by Chirag Paswan."
The political tussle between Chirag Paswan and Paras
This dispute began around the time of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP included Chirag Paswan among its candidates. Paras resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against this decision. The two were previously members of the Lok Janshakti Party, founded by the late Ram Vilas Paswan, but their political distance widened after Chirag split the party.
Chirag Paswan is currently negotiating a “respectable agreement” with the BJP, JDU, Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha within the NDA. Paras clarified that the RLJP will now contest the Bihar Election 2025 with all possible force.
Seat-sharing and alliance complexities
An RLJP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the RLJP had to take this step due to delays in joining the India Block and finalizing the seat-sharing formula. He said, "The nomination filing process will begin soon, so we don't need to delay any further."
He also noted that RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and alliance partners like the Congress are trying to bring Paras on board. However, according to him, the alliance's coordination committee has not yet called RLJP leaders for talks, leaving workers in a state of confusion.
